It occurs twice in a lunar month on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) during the waning and waxing phase of the moon. This sacred period is believed to be auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, offering an opportunity for devotees to seek their divine blessings for the removal of sins and fulfilment of wishes.

The Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple of Wellington proudly upholds this tradition by performing Rudrabhishekam during every Pradosham. Rudrabhishekam, a powerful ritual, involves the ceremonial bathing of the Shiva Lingam with sacred substances while chanting the Rudram, a Vedic hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva.
